MLA was founded in Hong Kong in 1983 as the first international list brokerage based in Asia.
List specialization remains a core component of the company’s service with 280 lists under management and
over 4,500 lists available through the company’s brokerage services.
Beyond being a provider of lists, MLA provides in-house and at times through its channel partners direct
mail printing, laser addressing, lettershopping, database management services, call center services,
fulfillment etc. in Manila, India, Shenzhen (China)
and Bangkok. Cost savings for clients based in Hong Kong, Europe and the USA are between 20% to 50%
depending on the components of the DM package.
MLA through its contacts with reliable private and public sector postal operators can negotiate competitive
postal rates within Asia and from Asia to the USA, Europe and Rest of the World.
MLA has been handling regional and global direct marketing campaigns since 1983. With its network of partners,
and extensive experience, the company recommends responsive lists, provides strategic advice, manages low cost
DM printing and production and negotiates low postal rates for regional and international campaigns.

Background: The company is founded by James Thornton, who launched "Business Traveler" Magazine's Europe and Middle
East Edition in 1976 building up a paid circulation (at the time) of 56,000 through direct mail. He then came
to Asia in 1981 to launch "Business Traveler's" Asia-Pacific edition - without the help of any Asia based list
brokerage since none existed at that time.
After selling his publishing interests in 1983 and realizing the need for a global list brokerage, he launched
MLA as such a brokerage operating out of Hong Kong with clients based primarily in the U.S.A., Europe and Hong
Kong/Singapore.
In its early years, due to James Thornton's knowledge of international periodical publishing, many of MLA's
clients were magazine and newsletter publishers seeking to acquire subscribers both within the Asia-Pacific
edition and globally.
He speaks widely at international DM conferences and seminars in the USA, Europe and Asia, he contributes
regularly to international DM publications such as TARGET MARKETING, DM NEWS, PUBLISHER'S MULTINATIONAL DIRECT
etc.
The company became an active member of the Hong Kong Direct Marketing Association (HKDMA), the European Direct
Marketing Association (now FEDMA) and the Direct Marketing Association in the USA (The DMA).
